Mahatma, Shastri remembered; VP, PM pay tribute at Raj Ghat

On the 142nd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on Saturday, VP Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chief Sonia Gandhi visited Rajghat to pay tribute to the Father of the Nation.

Dignitaries also paid glowing tributes to former Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri, on his 107th birth anniversary.
Sonia Gandhi and a large number of dignitaries  offered floral tributes at the memorial and remembered the services of Shastri.
After undergoing surgery for an undisclosed aliment over a month ago, Sonia Gandhi on Sunday made her first public appearance when she attended a prayer meeting at Raj Ghat on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary.
Sonia was there for about 15-20 minutes at the memorial along with Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and senior BJP leader L K Advani.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Union Urban Development Minister Kamalnath were also present at the memorial among others.
Leaders of various religions also offered prayers at the Gandhi samadhi. After the prayers, Advani was seen talking to Gandhi apparently enquiring about her health.
Gandhi had undergone a surgery for undisclosed aliment in August and returned to the capital last month. Though she had attended a couple of meetings with top Congress leaders, she had not attended any public function so far.
